DOX – Multi-functional Cultural Center Highlighted by the Huge Airship Hanging on its Terrace
DOX (longer name: The DOX Centre for Contemporary Art) is a multi-functional cultural center with high quality exhibitions and an interesting design, highlighted by the huge airship hanging on its terrace.
Reasons to go there
There are lots of them:
First and foremost, there are multiple exhibitions ongoing at the same time, usually from different visual arts mediums and very different topics, so it’s very hard for you not to get exposed to something you won’t enjoy.
The design of its overall space is quite spectacular, making it quite an experience: Located on the premises of a century old factory, the rectangular space with white exterior walls is in a very unique ‘contrasting harmony’ with its surrounding space. Even before you enter the space, there are multiple things that catches your eyes: The big writing on the corner of the building, the poster just above the entrance, and of course, the peak at the huge airship greeting you and making sure you are entering a special place. Interior is just as interesting – basically a maze where you feel frequently lost – in an awesome dream 🙂
They also host frequent “accompanying” events to their exhibitions, which are live events like guided tours, theatre plays, discussions that are in the same topic with the exhibitions.
And finally, we already mentioned it but it deserves a second go: THE AIRSHIP! It is called Gulliver – we shouldn’t spoil it by disclosing why 🙂 – and you can actually enter inside. They are planning some discussions there in summer time.
Simply put, DOX offers a complete package for contemporary arts, and this may be an understatement.
What not to miss
- Enter the airship!
- Make sure you check their website for the live events.
- Museum shop is also quite cool.
And finally, it has multiple floors/rooms, so it is easy to miss a complete exhibition. Maybe best is to get a museum map on your way in?
From recent exhibitions / events:
Couple of mins walking from Ortenovo Náměstí tram stop, or 5 mins from U Průhonu tram stop. Make sure you walk from Osandí street side before entering to see the cool exterior wall writings.
Dox is located in Holešovice district, the previously industrial & now transforming into a very cool district of arts / cultural events / social life.
